My buddies and I are almost ready for our first AG batch.
I just received some SS fittings from buyfittingsonline.com which I need to complete the mash cooler conversion and the dip tub on our keggle.

Should I do anything with these fittings before attaching them? I was thinking just a quick boil and/or soak them in StarSan. The dip tube fittings will obviously be exposed to a lot of high temps during use but the MLT fittings won't be exposed to any boiling water so they would need to be cleaned up ahead of time. I know SS is supposed to be pretty safe but I thought maybe some precautions should be taken before their first use?

Thanks for any advice you can offer - I just want to do it right before I get everything put together.

SS is food safe and needs no prep. You can rinse with hot water if you want to remove any thin from the packaging process, but that is all if anything you will need to do. That's the beauty of SS.

I was thinking a soak in PBW or some detergent-like cleaner would be better at removing any manufacturing oils/grease. then the obligitory StarSan soak.

Is there really a reason to sanitize something that is going in the mash tun or brew kettle?

Need to sanitize is questionable... need to CLEAN is important. I agree with the previous post that you should clean in order to remove oil/grease.

Will do an Oxyclean soak this evening. It's the original manufacturing grease/oil/whatever I was worried about. The fittings look nice but they aren't exactly mirror polished, you know? So I figured it couldn't hurt to try and clean them up a little.
As far as sanitizing, the boil kettle pretty much takes care of itself and everything gets a nice StarSan rinse before brewing anyway.
Thanks again - getting pumped about going AG.

Stainless fittings will have machining oils on them. Use a general cleanser on them like oxyclean, pbw, or unscented dishwasher detergent as mentioned above to clean the oil on them before using.
