I remember Billy Preston discussing subtraction of nothing from nothing leaving nothing... and a computer science teacher telling me not to instruct the punch card mega beast computer to perform this operation.

I highly recommend getting a copy of John Palmers How to Brew, 4th edition. It will teach you how to make your first beer in a few (six?) chapters but also is a great reference as you get deeper into the hobby.

It certainly is a wonderful book to learn homebrewing. And once you're a seasoned homebrewer it's a solid reference to everything homebrewing. Alas, it's a long read, even the first few chapters on how to get started can be a bit abstract or even intimidating.

There are probably plenty of short tutorials and YouTube vids that would be better suited.
We have quite a few threads on the very topic on how to brew your first batch here on our forums.

To the OP, @WinoJo be aware, most instructions that come with recipe (ingredients) kits are usually not informative enough to brew a batch.
