I'm thinking about starting to grow my own hops next year. According to the USDA Hardiness map I'm near the border of zones 5b and 6a in Colorado. We're high desert with pretty sandy soil. What varieties will work best and what kind of soil amendments do I need to increase my odds of being successful?

They have good descriptions of the hops. Also read through their Hops Blog. Specifically Grower Notes - Spring 2016. This year, figure out location and trellis design. Then get a soil test of the location. That will give you an idea of possible varieties to grow and amendments needed.

Most varieties would grow, it just depends how well based on your soil.
