Hey, first post. Cut to the chase. Into the fermenter friday with OG .090 dont know how it got that high. It was a kit and I followed directions. I double checked my hydrometer in water and it was spot on. Anyway I just checked (Tues) and gravity is .029 and still active. I pitched US05 at 78 degrees and put the bucket in my "bunker" which stays at 68 degrees, worked a 72 hour shift at the station. It tasted great. I guess my question is does this even sound possible?

Holy cow! Extract partial boil chilled to 80 f. topped off with tap water from my kitchen faucet. Pitched us-05 straight from packet fermenting at constant 68.

If it was extract and your volumes were correct there is no way to miss your og

When you top off with water its hard to get a proper reading since sort and water don't mix well

So a full boil is the only way to ever get an accurate OG? I topped off by pouring water from a pitcher from about five feet i thought that would both mix and aerate.
Thanks for the replies, 1.090 was pretty rediculous even if I did get a little excited.

No. Try stirring with a sanitized spoon to mix.

even stirring won't guarantee a proper mix/reading

if you are doing extract and your volume is what the recipe calls for you already know your OG

That makes total sense. The total amount of sugars are already measured in the kit. So the OG cant be higher unless they sent too much, which they probably didnt. Should have my keezer set up and going for the anual bash on the 18th. I have a wheat conditioning in one keg and the black ipa ill barely have finished.

I stopped taking OG readings for extract beers because as long as I got my final volume right, and all the extract in the beer, then it was whatever Brewpal said it would be. Best idea ever? Probably not, but oh well. It's one of the great things about extract brewing IMO -> no efficiency worries/issues.
