Sprinkle on. Add water. A little scrubbing. Let it sit for an hour.
Works great on my ss pot.
 
Yeah, don't use that on aluminum unless you want to build the oxide layer back up. If it's just a little gunk don't worry about it. You're boiling it anyway. If it's a lot then you probably need to take the fitting apart and soak it. Hot water and a paper towel is all I use on my aluminum kettle. It has sugar and hops residue in it and has worked flawlessly with no infections.
