Yuri, Custom Chrome (an aftermarket co.) have pipes like that, you want the ones that have "anti-reversion" built in. They are muffled pipes, but they are free flowing for performance, and have a nice tone without being obnoxious like drag pipes. We used some on a sportster briefly when drag racing, before we switched to the Thunderheader.

So SWMBO and I went to the local H-D dealership today to look at Buells. I really want a Lightning, but she didn't like the fact that the passenger seat is just wide enough for one cheek. She liked the Ulysses a lot though. I kind of want something sportier, but it would be nice to have the wide seat and windshield for touring.

Don't buy a Buel for riding double. Unless maybe you get a girl with two cheeks the size of one!
Actually, if you're set on the Buell, get the one you like, you can most likely get a second seat from Corbin that will be much more comfortable for riding double, and you could put the small seat on when you go out without SWMBO (also let's her know you aren't taking any "passengers" when she's not with you).

Everyone else is bragging. I traded my 1988 883 on this puppy 1-1/2 ago.

Nice bike, hope you're finding time to ride it (not after consuming HB's)!

1200 miles and counting...

Finally got around to installing a few mods:

Harley Sundowner seat - BIG improvement! I highly recommend it! It's less than $250 - so it's a little less expensive than some of the other fancy aftermarket stuff (Corbin, Mustang, etc).

Just got a set of Cycle Shack slash cut slip-ons today. I installed them in the rain...just had to check out the new digs. They look great...but sound a little obnoxious...like wake the neighbors' kids obnoxious. It's still raining, and I rode home in a hail storm (again...dammit), so I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to give 'em a try on the road.

Next up: a high flow intake and re-jetting.

A picture...in the rain...again...

EDIT:
A curiosity...maybe you know something I don't LouT...
I have (had) a CA emissions bike. I thought it was supposed to have catalytic converters installed. Only the forward muffler had a catalytic converter in it (CATALYST stamped in the side, obvious honeycomb converter material forward of the baffles). The rear one does not have a cat in it. Either Harley has a very weird way of setting up their exhaust, or my bike was defective from the factory. Anybody know for sure?

I don't know about the cat converters, sorry. One cylinder on a V-twin always runs "dirtier" than the other, so this may have been Harley's way to deal with meeting emissions without spending a dime more than necessary...

Used to be that CA bikes had CA camshafts -- with negative valve overlap - for cleaner emissions. Not sure what the current state of affairs is w/regard to meeting EPA emissions.

You aren't in CA, so I think you would've been ok with a full exhaust, vs. slip-ons ---- but the slip ons are a nicer price for sure, and easier to re-sell if you aren't crazy about the tone - Cycle Shacks can be a bit loud to some.

I finally got my bike registered and have taken a couple of rides. Late '84 Sportster XLH1000 with ported cylinder heads, hot Andrews cams, S&S super E carb, Custom Chrome anti-reversion exhaust, chain drive with drag racing chain and short gearing (about 3000 rpm at 50-55 mph). We drag raced her a few times before stepping into a fire-restoration of an Evolution 883 that we converted into a 1200 that now makes about 108 hp at rear wheel and runs high 10's in the quarter mile. My '84 would only run low 14's/high 15's - you can run faster than that with your stock bike Yuri!

Anyway, mods are fun, riding is a blast -- for me riding this bike is fun but I don't want to go far - it's layed out for short hops and it's a small bike so I feel all folded up on it with my 34" inseam...

Thanks for the info, Lou!

Actually, the cats are in the mufflers, so slip-ons negate the CA emissions stuff immediately...not that I care much. I chose the slip-ons for price. I would've gone with a full system, but it was well over my budget. The Cycle Shacks are pretty f-ing loud - my wife told me it scared the $hit out of her when I fired the bike up at 5:30 this morning to go to work.

It would really surprise me if I had no overlap on the cams - the idle and power band characteristics seem to be very consistent with moderate overlap cams. I don't think I'm going to swap the cams - I understand you don't gain much with a Sportster cam swap unless you're shooting for a true drag bike.

How are you making 108 rwhp with a 1200 conversion? Serious head work and different pistons? Sounds like a fun bike!

Oh yeah, well eat yer heart out too:

Got one of these babies recently. 59 cc :D

S'pose I should add, nice bike. I'd like to get one too, nothing big. Although I kind of like the Yamaha's V-Star classic in black. Just in case anyone hits the lottery and wants to buy me one :fro:

SWMBO has given me the OK to buy a Buell next summer :rockin:. I think we're going to get the Ulysses.

I've also been thinking it would be fun to build a bike - you can pick up some rolling chassis kits for a decent price. Something like this: http://www.steelthundercc.com/midusa_rolling_chassis.html

If I ever did that it would be fun to make a bobber to tool around town and keep the Uly for long rides.

had the SWMBO get on the bike for the first time yesterday and fire 'er up....she was getting all gitty inside :D

The Buell's are real nice!

I got one of these, but mine's only 52 cc :cross:

Where's my glasses.
Yeah...the vid quality, which wasn't great to begin with, went to hell when YouTube "processed" it. Oh well...it sounds ok. What you can't feel in the video is the 105 degree heat from that bright sun above.

It's all the bling and the sun reflecting off that cool exhaust.

I like chrome on a bike.:mug:

Now about the heat....I'm jealous, have you seen my recent threads about flooding and no summer?

It's a list of stuff, really. Headwork, cams, thunderheader exhaust, S&S carb with thunderjet, aftermarket ignition module, very high compression, etc.
THis is a pure drag bike, it wouldn't be fun on the street.
We did have a customer with a zippers 88 inch engine in his sportster - he made 108 hp at the rear wheel and the bike was a blast to ride on the street. We ended up extending his swingarm a bit to help him keep the front end down. It was very stock looking, and he kept it pretty ratty looking on purpose so he could suck people in. Licence plate said "GRLSBIKE" -- and he'd have his wife on back, and a milkcrate full of stuff strapped on behind her, and just dust the crap out of other bikes that didn't realize what he had.

So, are you wearing earplugs yet, to deal with those cycle shack pipes?

PS -- Some nice chainsaws being shown off! It's all about the cc's, I see!

Yuri, I just watched your video. Nice. Is the bike cold in that clip? I ask this because the idle sounds like it is lower than spec. With a hot engine it should be running a bit higher rpms than what yours sounds like in the video. I noticed no tachometer on your bike, must be they made it an option - used to be standard on everything but 883's if I remember right.

Building bikes is fun, but don't think you'll be getting an awesome bike at a bargain price. Yes, you can build it to a price point, but you'll get exactly what you paid for.
The RMV/DMV thing can also be a hassle, look into it before you order part 1.
Have fun!
Buell will be sweet, I've been eying them, too -- probably would go used since they can be found for bargain prices.
I'm also jonesing for one of those super motard type bikes. I saw a Yamaha WR450 dirtbike that was converted to motard with street wheels and tires, etc. and it looked pretty awesome. I have no room for toys, though -- just a 1 car garage. Wanting to put a detached 2 car garage out back with a room upstairs, but I think it'll be overkill for the neighborhood (probably never get our money back out of it). Oh well.

Yeah, I'll probably never get around to building one, but it would be fun if I ever had the time. Unfortunately work keeps getting busier all the time, so my hobbies are starting to fall by the wayside. If I ever did it would be for the experience and so I could have a bike just like I wanted, not to save money. Plus, I have a 66 Fairlane 500 gathering dust in the garage that I need to get rid of before SWMBO will let me get any bike.

A big garage is worth every penny....I have a detached 2 stall that's the size of a 3 stall, with a big shop area off to the side. We're thinking of moving next year and I'm hoping I can get a 3 car garage on the new house.

The super motards look like they'd be a blast to tear around town. I imagine you could put a "pseudo motard" together pretty cheap from a used dual purpose bike.

BTW, anyone see the new Buell 1125? Not really a practical every day bike, but it would be a lot of fun...146 hp at the crank in a 375lb bike.

Lou - the bike was just getting warmed up in the video. It idles a little higher after a few more minutes or a couple of miles.

You should never have mentioned Zipper's. Now my gears are turning in a wicked direction... I don't think I'm gonna be able to convince SWMBO that I need that kit any time soon, but it just seems too cool...

Earplugs make the ride a little nicer with those new mufflers, though I routinely forget them before putting the helmet on.

Good.

You don't convince, just bring her to the drag races! The AHDRA has a big event in Phoenix every year, just take the weekend off and go there, even if you drive in a 4 wheeler (car/SUV, whatever). It's all Harley drag racing!

I've never done the earplugs thing, but I don't like loud pipes on my personal bike. I've test ridden plenty that were too loud, some even at my hand (at customers' request), but any bike I've owned I've made sure to keep it pretty quiet.

No, I'll have to check out that Buell, sounds awesome!

Yup, I miss my old detached over-sized 2-car garage, but not as much as I miss my motorcycle shop! Kind of sucks that I sold off so much stuff that would be nice to have, even if only infrequently used -- hydraulic press, rim-clamp tire machine, drill press, 2 stage 80 gallon compressor, etc. I did keep one of my air lifts and all my specialty tools, though. Yuri's got a future motorcycle shop setup at his house from what I can tell, makes me jealous!

I don't think used dual sports are that easy to find in this area, and I'm sworn off e-bay due to past problems w/butthead sellers (and buyers)...

I'm glad there is no convincing needed in my life... "What, we are going to the track? OK!"

I thought I would give this thread a little bump and post a shameless pic of my new bike. Last weekend was the first weekend I could of brewed but decided not to due to a nice trip over to Tombstone and Bisbee.

Very, very nice! The paint job is over the top... :) It's more machine than this old man needs though.

wow, Iron butt eh? Props to you for that.

Yea I set out looking for a black bike and came home with this one. Go figure. Just put HK3s on her and wow, if the colors dont get me noticed, the pipes sure will.
