I always brew with my 1-1/2 yr old son, and he loves everything about it. He could stir a bucket of water with a carboy cleaner for hours. Anyway, I sort of jokingly asked my mom to make a mash paddle for us out of a mostly dead branch from a crab apple tree in her yard. She turned it around in a day! I think it looks awesome. The handle is curved to avoid some nasty knots and stuff, and I think it makes it look even more unique. Can't wait to use it!

Do most people just boil a wooden mash paddle before its first use?

I think the curved handle actually makes it look more ergonomic. Pointing the curve away from you (think bow and arrow) would be easier on the bottom hand I think. It looks great.
