I was absent from the forums for a few months due to work and other major projects I had going on - the biggest was building my new deck.

I built it by myself over a weeks vacation and then finished up a few things over the next few weekends. I'd never built anything this big before by myself but I just took it one board at a time.

Overall, I'm still really impressed with it and its been great fun hanging out on late at night while kicking back with a few brews and a good cigar.

Here are a few photos:

Wow, that's nice. I put a second level on my deck over the summer, but nothing like that!

I love the pergola (how the hell do you spell that?)

Very nice. I especially like the railing with the twisted iron. One thing is missing on the "beer" deck however. Where is the beer? I can tell you have a lot of fun around the house. By the way, how many fingers do you have left? Congrats on the Zymurgy article. I haven't seen it, but hope to get a copy while they are still available. You are a brewer after my own heart.

Beautiful! Good move backing the steps, so the kids can't get their legs caught.

I'm still trying to decide for my front porch: deck treatment or enclosed sunroom?

Here's my project, for what it's worth.

Not up to John's standards, but given that I didn't own a circular saw until three years ago, I'm pretty happy...

I have nothing but respect for those of you that can do this kind of work. I tried to build a scratching post for the cat and it was a complete disaster. Both of these decks look great!

Yeah, no beer on my "beer" deck in those photos... I'm working on it though. I'm still really impressed with the results. I didn't even have blueprints! Just got out there and sort of "felt" it. I knew I wanted a semi-seperate octagon and something to house the all-weather fan (which turned into the pergola), but other than that - nothing. The fishbone pattern on the main deck was even an an afterthought... And for the banisters - I COMPLETELY lucked out on those... those cost $25.00 for a box of 10. I was going to need between 160-175 of them. I decided to just go look at them at Lowes and, unbelievably, they had them on clearance for $8.00 a box - and how many boxes did they have? Why 18 of course...

That is a great deck. I wonder who has the biggest deck? But, if you have money you don't need a big deck. Or if you trim the bushes around the deck it looks bigger.

Couldn't help myself.

That's a really nice piece o work! I can see myself passed out on a lounge chair while the skeeters have thier way with me!;)

Color me JEALOUS. We put a brick patio in our back yard and had to pay someone to do it. I'm all thumbs when it comes to tools.

you may want to mow the lawn and buy a dog to keep those street-children away. poor kids, they must come from a broken home, it looks like their parents can't afford to buy them pants! :D

Just kidding around, it looks great! So does yours, Bird!

you mean a good sized watch dog like this?

But seriously - the kids are a little to much like me - they can never seem to keep their pant on.

The deck is awesome, but I'd settle for your back yard!

Our house is on a slab, so an actual deck is out of the question. I'm really wanting to do a nice patio, but man what a load of work. I had grand plans for a flagstone patio. We're on a hill, so the yard slopes from one side to the other, so I'd get to do a retaining wall, too. It would be sweet, but damn.

Actual conversation between my friend and his wife:

Wife: I want to build a pergola out back.
Man: How do you spell that?
Wife: P E R G O L A, I think.
Man: Hmm there's no F in pergola, and there's never going to be an F in pergola.

True story.
