I've been using commercially made PBW for years for cleaning my carboys, but I always found it too expensive to use for cleaning brew kettles, mash tuns, etc. Slowly both my brew kettle and mash tun were getting darker and darker brown. I don't think it was beerstone, but just burnt wort that accumulated over the years. I don't think it affected the flavor or taste of my beer, they turned out great. It just looked gross. In any case, I started making my own PBW using 7 parts Oxiclean and 3 parts TSP/90.
So, yesterday I decided to give it a try on the BK and MLT. I used about 2 oz per gallon of water. First, I added some to my MLT and heated it on my stove (not boiling, just hot). Within 1/2 hour I could see the stains coming off. Then, I tackled the BK which was really bad and I had to add a lot to get to the top of the BK. I didn't heat it, but just let it soak for an hour or so. The brown stains came off easily with very light rubbing with a sponge. Amazing!!! This PBW stuff rocks!!!
