i have bought a lager starter kit all in the 5 gallon barrell and then it says add yeast and cover with lid . will this just blow off as the lid will make a complete seal
No, probably not. You're going to want to prevent contamination. I'm not sure what a Young's kit is, though. I don't think we have them in the US, or at least, I've never seen one.
Do you have a picture, or some instructions, you could link to?
If you started going already (i.e. the yeast has been pitched) then just leave the lid on loosely like Yooperbrew mentions. Otherwise you can put together a make-shift blow-off tube. Essentially this would entail drilling a hole in the lid and sticking an appropriately sized tube into the hole, the other end submerged into a bucket of water.
thank you blow off tube sounds good as if i leave lid loose im sure my son will tip it off. think i will email youngs too and say they need to be more explanatory for halfwits like me

Well, you're definitely NOT a halfwit. I mean, you figured that the lid would pop off due to the off gassing of the co2. I bet most people don't- until the lid blows off.
We use little plastic airlocks most of the time- through a hole in the fermenter lid. That let's the co2 come out, but prevents bacteria and wild yeast from getting in (not to mention fruitflies). A blow off tube is just a big airlock.
well im all makeshifted up with my tube and and jug of water fingers crossed now that i will be enjoying a tastey brew in the near future. Thanks for your help this site is ace
