I made these graphics up to use as a template for my control box. It made it easy to line it all up on the screen and visualize the footprint. I taped the template on and center punched through the paper to mark my hole locations then discarded it for drilling. Everything came out right where I wanted it without trying to transfer measurements directly to the box.

I thought I'd post the files if anyone wants to use them. I put each of the three elements on one Illustrator file so you can cut, paste or modify as needed. There is a pdf too if you have some other program you want to pull them into.

I decided to place everything towards the front of the box thinking it would be easier to place or remove the back plane. It's going to have a fair amount going on near those receptacle holes.

My bench top drill press was too small to deal with this so here is what I rigged up to hold it for my hand held. The 1 x 2's fit perfect to shim the lip of the cabinet for the clamps. I had the 4x4's clamped together with the shims in place for a solid backing when I center punched. The height worked out perfect too for nice steady pressure on the drill.

I'm pretty handy but I had never used a step bit. It had me freaked out for some reason. It went a lot easier than I had expected. 1 step near the end or 2 near the beginning followed by a little cutting oil. I did use a good quality bit and I'm really glad I didn't blow the cash on punches.
