Made my first homebrew yesterday. A few mistakes but it seems to be working.
Mistake number 1. I had my equipment soaking in my bucket of sanitizer, I forgot the airlock was in there and when I dumped the bucket in the sink, I turned on the disposal to make the sink drain faster. Needless to say the airlock was toast.
I fixed that mistake with a barbed fitting in the bucket lid, 2 feet of hose and a glass of sanitizer worked in a pinch.
Mistake number 2. I forgot that liquid yeast needs time to kick. Instead of the 24 starter batch, my yeast got 2 hours in the pouch before I pitched. I didn't really think it would work. When I got home tonight it was bubbling like mad. I was able to replace the makeshift airlock with a real one and it is still bubbling away.
