He is cuddled on my lap worried about what is happening to his daddy. Dog knows. More than the humans know. Trying to console the dog, he's mad that he barely fits on my lap. Hubby sick and not knowing when/if he'll make it home from the hospital. Dog is so upset. I tried to give him some chicken and rice as consolation but he's not buying it. Animals know.

This is not a joke, hubby sick, I'm sad. I found this forum while going through a hard time. Thanks everyone, for everything.

My dog always seems to know these things, but only with me not my wife or kids. He really never got over my wife moving in here which changed a lot of things for him. Your dog will be your sense of comfort as you go through this.

When I was recovering from my heart surgery I had to stay at my sister and bil's house. They have a huge golden. Who although she's pretty old now she still thinks she's an active puppy, and a giant lap dog. She's the kinda dog dog that will bowl into you because she wants to love you up. She'll knock me over and I'm 6' 7".

We were all so worried how she would be when I came there from surgery, and just being there in general.

And you know something, she knew immediately that I was "tender" and she did two things immediately, she became very gentle and docile around me, even when we arrived, she didn't jump and bark at the screen door. She was there, but very quiet and hyper vigil towards me. I can't describe it but she knew something wasn't right.

AND she became my bodyguard protector. For the whole six weeks I was there, she almost never left my side.

Her whole demeanor around me was gently, and loving she would just sit at my feet or if my hand was hanging over the side of the chair she would make contact with it. Whenever possible she would try to make physical contact, like she was sending me healing vibes.

And she would be very guarded about who approached me. And that no one approached me too quickly. She would transpose her body around my Nephew's Gf's young kids if they were over, and one time she almost attacked the home care nurse who came to check on me.

And if I was in any pain, which my ribs were, a lot, she'd be looking to see if anyone was hurting me. She also slept outside the bedroom door. Right there, with her body blocking the door.

She was never like this with me before. Besides the wanting to knock me over when I walked in the door, she was never attentive to me. I've never been big on large dogs who thought they were lap dogs.

Now that it's been a couple years, she still wants to leap onto me when I walk in like the old days, but she still seems more "connected" with me.

A couple years ago, a friend of mine got home from a short work trip, and was feeling kind of run down. Walked in the house, sat down on the couch, and his dog jumped up and put a paw on each shoulder, almost like he was sniffing John's breath. His daughter (~10 at the time) walked in the room and was coming over to give John a hug... and Jake turned on her. Wouldn't let her anywhere near John. When Jake did the same thing with John's wife, they figured something must be up, and he went in to the clinic the next morning. Turns out he had a pretty good case of pneumonia, and Jake wasn't going to let the women get close enough to John to catch it.
