My Brutus 9 1/2

Well I am going for it.

I am building a Brutus 9 1/2. Named that way because is it being made out mild steel and not Stainless. Gonna paint the frame.

The frame pic in the Members Gallery

All of the important pieces are cut and fit together perfectly.
Hole drilling and tacking is in store for tomorrow.
Run to lowes and Harbor freight for more goodies.

Are you planning to go the low pressure propane route with the Baso H19's and Banjo burners, or with electric ignition and high pressure propane system.

Low pressure with Hurricane burners. I am making a hybrid Brutus 10. A combination of the original and Apparatus' version. The Hurricane can be easily switch to NG later and I just LOVE Apparatus' set-up.

Just shopping for casters and other hardware now.

With the banjo burners you can drill out the orifices from high pressure size to low pressure LP then again to Natural gas. If you start with low pressure LP the conversion to NG is fairly easy and you can use the 24V furnace valves for standing pilot safety or the dual valve type for electric ignition.

Can you elaborate on the valve/pilot light set-up?

See the thread below. This is for a Honeywell Y8610U. It can be used for Natural Gas or Low Pressure Propane (<11 WC). I think Claudius B and Kladue both use them. The Y8610U is an intermittent pilot gas valve. If the pilot goes out it will try to re-light the pilot. If it can't re-light the pilot after a period of time it will shut down. I think it is a measure of safety beyond just using an Asco valve and constant unmonitored pilot.

The gas system on the phase 2 system is a bit different than the others as it uses mass flow controllers to modulate high pressure Lp to the burners, ignition is still a honeywell ignition module and pilot though.

I see the safety factor, And I agree that looks much safer. I would like some input as to HOW this gets incorporated with the Love Controllers and Temp Sensors?

I am in the process of building a mixture of Apparatus's brutus and the original one. Using Apparatus' idea of the Hurricane burners.

If you look two replies back (Post #6) in this thread you will see a Link: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/gas-temperature-control-dummies-116632/. Look at the bottom of the post and you will see a diagram where all the connections are laid out for you using an Auber Instruments PID instead of a Love Controller.

Here is the frame so far.

You will notice the fittings on the gas rail gone. I started with black pipe fittings. was able to pressure test to 50 psi and the leg welds do not leak. The fitting however were a disaster.

New fittings going on tonight i hope

Okay so I finally got the gas beam thing sealed up. 5 hours at 50 psi and not a smidge of movement on the gauge nor did the compressor fire up.

I think I ma good to go.

Pics coming soon but middle hurricane burner mounted. March pumps mounted ( at least one is, gotta get the second one). spalsh shield on the pumps is on. Therminator is located and mount is done. Only two of the four casters on. Had a couple from a privous project. Waiting on a UPS truck for the new ones.

Swing arm for the control box is on and working great.....

All welded up. I am a decent welder but a freaking artist with a grinder!!!!!!

Since I am not using stainless, what kind of paint do you guys suggest?

Okay, so I got my last two burners. and was able to fab the mounts out of some scrap stuff I had from a previous project.

Got a few items still coming and yet to be ordered.

Burner Test:

I am going to fab some heat shields. 16 or 18 ga. steel or maybe even aluminum circles around the burners to concentrate the heat and give some wind protection.

Wife is wondering when we will be brewing again. Aint life grand?????

Based upon the above burner test I fabbed a heat shield out of 22 ga. sheet steel. Gonna trim to length and spot weld then fasten to the mounts. should provide a wind guard and shield some of the heat off the frame.

Rustolium or some kind of paint that prevents rust. What about that stuff you paint onto pick up truck beds, something like Rhino Lining. I always thought that stuff would be awesome.

Testing the heat shields with a keggle. All looks good, able to really dial down the gas as a lot more heat is directed to the keggle.

Painted the frame and waiting for other parts to start working on plumbing this bad boy.

Amazing how heavy those things get isnt it? Mine 2/3 the size made with 1.25x1.25 14g. Took the casters off to paint it, they are never coming off again.

Keggles get welded this week I hope. and UPS will bring me some presents to continue and/or finish the build.

Yes I did "buy" the keggles. Or I should say I exchanged them for cash. I purchased them from a friend of mine who owns a Latino food restaurant in the area.

I Told him I needed 3 kegs and he said "$40.00 a piece" and I told him i was going to cut them up and he could NEVER have them back and he said "$40.00 a piece." I said that he would NEVER and I mean NEVER get them back and he said "$40.00 each." So I paid the man and off we went. I know that this will seam like it is in a "Grey Area" as far as ownership of the kegs and to those members of this board, I apologize. I didn't obtain them through false or dishonest means. I told him what I was going to do repeatedly and he sold them to me.

The steel I used is 2x2x1/8" tube, and I purchased 48 feet of it for .80 a pound, right at $106.00. I had the steel shop cut it into 4 12 foot sections for me (they would have shipped two 24 foot sections) and I have a 12 foot section sitting on my garage floor waiting for another project. I just love left overs. so 36 feet of steel to cut to Lonnie's specs.

As far as the running total I decline to say that here as my wife does read these too. Just kidding. I started to keep a running tally but when I decided to use the gas valves and ignition modules that i am using i basically said "What the F@#*!" and figured I save so much by not going stainless that I could have fun elsewhere. Like I am bagging the weldless fittings on the keggles and having the things welded. I supply the fittings and a local dude welds for me at $10.00 per fitting.

Just a quick note to show my status. Slow for now, witing for the UPS guy and who ever is bringing me stuff.
