So I have gone ahead and bought all the stuff I need to get brewing my beer
I have almost completed my wort chiller which is made from 20ft of 12mm (1/2 inch) annealed copper terminating at a tap fitting to take a couple of flexible fittings I happened to have lying handy... so why not make use. I used 12mm because I think the more metal and water you have in contact with the wort the quicker you cool it. I am also going to rig my cordless drill to drive a mixing paddle to turbo the process :D .
I have been going on a bit about energy conservation in the boiling phase and came across this video on youtube . Thought provoking for me on two levels. one it does not seem to have a detrimental effect on DMS retention and two the type of beer I will be attempting to make relies almost totally on heavy late hopping for flavour/aroma . I am guessing if I double up on the early hopping I will be near perfect for my flavour profile.

Using the drill to stir the wort during cooling should speed that up considerably. I do an ice water bath for cooling and the cold wort goes to the bottom while the top center wort is much warmer. It takes much longer to get that little bit in the top middle to pitching temp.
