Saved some yeast (WLP-001) for the first time but may have waited too long to collect it.
Last batch racked / bottled and had a nice ½ layer of stuff on the bottom along with about a ¼ of beer left on top. Added 16 oz distilled water to it and swirled it around. Let the heavy stuff settle and poured the rest in a sanitized 1.5 qt Mason jar and topped with aluminum foil. However a couple days turned into 3 weeks. It had separated into two layers, diluted beer on top and at least 1.5 cups yeast. Siphoned the beer off and used a sanitized turkey baster (brand new / never used) to fill 3 White Labs tubes to about 60%. Stored them in a cold (not freezing) place.
The beer I siphoned off did not smell the same as the beer I racked 3 weeks earlier. It smelled similar to vinegar but the yeast smelled like yeast.
And yes, I have read several ways to wash / save yeast and this was my mangled method.
Suggestions?
