Hi All,

My beer store is far, and a I need a few Muslim Bags. Do you all ever use anything else, or is their a type of store other than a brew store to buy these?

Nylon mesh bags work and are reusable. I remember reading that a forum member uses a sock. Certain kind of sock though can't think of it off the top of my head...

Muslin is a fabric- you can buy it at any fabric store and make your own bags, or buy it ready made at a homebrew store.

Instead of muslin, you could use paint strainer bags from a hardware store, depending on what you needed the bags for.

Suppose you could always check down the local mosque:D ;)

If it's just for a couple of Oz of hops you might find something useable in a drug store. A wide roll of gauze, or the like, but make sure it doesn't have that medicinal smell and sanitize it before use.:mug:

You can buy cheesecloth in a pinch. I used a double thick layer last brew and just tied it up with some string. If you buy it from the grocery store its a little pricy but gets the job done. Just got myself a nylon bag to save on some cash :)

I hate when I show up late to a good typo/pun. Just as well, I probably would have said something inappropriate about bottle bombs or something anyway.

And that's just wrong.

you mean like it being an IRA with the name "car bomb"??:mug:

I'd start worrying if I heard the box of aging bottles scream "PRAISE ALLAAAH!!" right before going boom...:p But the so called muslin hop/grain bags look more like cheese cloth to me. We used to get it in a continuous roll of cheese cloth "tube" that we cut to length to sock hams, etc for the smoke house. That's what I'd check into, just a smaller width.

+1 on the paint strainer. I rigged up something that holds the paint strainer sandwiched between two pieces of PVC so it can dangle down into wort and then it sits on top of the brew kettle with some all thread I drilled into the PVC. I saw it somewhere on the intertubes but I can't remember where. Makes adding hops throughout the boil SO much easier.

I was sure all of my bags were Atheist, but then I discovered one of them hunched over the latest copy of The Watchtower the local door knockers threw at me...

I'm brewing tomorrow and ran into the same problem, I forgot to order bags. I saw turkey stuffing bags at Bed Bath & Beyond and grabbed a couple, hoping they'll work. they're thicker than the regular mesh or cheese cloth. Any thoughts or experiences with them?

Also, is it safe to mash or boil with nylon paint strainer bags?
