this is a follow up to this thread https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/ag-how-lauter-without-using-grain-bed-367889/ i started a few days back.

basically, i messed the lauter up and had did not sparge, resulting with a cloudy wort which i decided to leave settle overnight.

went to bed, woke up, and the work was clear and all the residual grain stuff was at the bottom. when i transferred the clear wort to the kettle, it smelled kinda funky. my hops, which i had stored for quite a while, also smelled kinda funky. and when i started the boil, the whole house started to smell like wet dog.

wild yeast? oxidizing? dunno...

what may have caused this smell?

Technically, no. You can still drink it without it hurting you, but it probably won't taste all that great.
