My grandson is spending 4 days in Montreal next week. He likes good beer. Any suggestions on best local breweries and other Canadian beers for him to try? Thanks for any input!

I don't know about good beer, but when I was going to school in Plattsburgh we'd go up and get pitchers of Rickard's Red at Peel Pub. More pleasant are pints at McKibbin's, especially on a live music night.
Montreal has its Jewish community just like NY. Bagels are like Chicago pizza, different enough from NY's it's not worth arguing which is better. Also smoked meat sandwiches at Schwartz's. Their version of pastrami.

They're good offerings are non IPA. Their stouts are really good. I hear the brewery is great.
I've also tried one beer from Three Musketeers (whatever that's translated into French) it was a while ago but I remember it was good. I hear their others are good too.
Unibroue is up there too.

I'm a province over so I can't speak for Montreal beer, but here's a few widely available brands I quite enjoy:

https://muskokabrewery.com/ They do a session ale called 'Detour' which is my go to beer when I have company with diverse tastes but everyone loves this one

...and one of my old favourites when good beer was difficult to get locally was Sleemans Cream Ale -reputed to be Al Capone's favourite beer which ironically led to Sleemans being shut down by the government and banned from brewing for 50 years for smuggling.

Just been to a Metro Grocery store near Montreal two weeks a go. INnundated with local craft brews - none of which I could find anythign substantial on with regard to a decent realistic review. Went with La Chouffejust to be safe .
By and large, Unibroue is fantastic. Their Terrible! (only found in multi-packs best I can tell) and La Fin Du Monde (Bombers, six packs, multi-packs) are wonderful

Grandson is back and got to try several on the recommended brews. He made it to McKibbin's but unfortunately wasn't able to get to the Unibroue brewery. He and I appreciate all the input. Y'all helped make his visit better. HBT folks are pretty awesome. Thanks!

I was looking into that last time I was going up (my dad's whole family is from Montreal) and I don't think Unibroue has any visitors facilities.
I was hoping for a gift shop or something - my favorite Fin du Monde glass broke a while back and I haven;t been able to get a replacement.
