I have never left my beer in the fermenter for a month, so never experienced mold. I have heard of filling the air lock with cheap vodka.

I do this. I could use star san in there, but the liquid has a tendency now and then to drip into the batch. I'd rather have it be vodka than star san when that happens.
 
I even mix white lightnin with Starsan in my airlocks. When they get dirty, rinse'em out good, then soak in PBW for awhile, then rinse again. Dunk in starsan before reusing, or allow to dry before storage.
