Hey guys, looking to build a cooler mash tun to use with a 'project' RIMS tube/panel I got for a very good price. Since its a 'project' (the build was never quit finished) I'm looking to build something I can use right away, but will eventually work in a recirculating configuration. I should prob point out that I plan on doing no sparge, and I probably will do beers with cereal. I am new to AG brewing. The basic purpose of this thread is to ensure that when I start using a RIMS tube with this tun I don't have any issues/wasted $.

My plan was to do the 60 qt Ice Cube build (found here), but my question is will this kind of manifold produce enough flow for a RIMS setup? I have done some research around HBT but most people talk about their tube/panel and not a whole lot of info on their MLT.

My other question is the return. It seems like some people just use a submerged hose, while others build return manifolds or other stuff. I'd like to keep it as simple as possible but if one option is better building a manifold should be simple.

If there is anything else I've forgotten to take into account, I'd also like to hear about it! Thanks! :mug:

A CPVC or copper manifold like that should work fine for a RIMS. Cut lots of slots so that it's pulling mash liquor evenly across the whole manifold (less chance of channeling). For the return, a lot of people just use silicone hose on top of the grain bed. I use a siphon sprayer on my HERMS and it works well, plus it's very simple and cheap (~$3).

Great thanks for the information. I've vaguely surprised I can't find info on what kind of mash tuns work well with RIMS. I got my cooler today and can't wait to get started!

If you are doing no sparge or batch sparge you don't need to worry about channeling. For RIMS any MT setup that drains from a manifold/braid/False Bottom can be used. You should try to design the return so that you can still use the lid of your MT to conserve heat.

I batch sparge and am seriously considering using the COFI design described here Brew Boss in my RIMS setup. I use an SS Brewing 20 gal MT.

For the return I'm using LocLine, it comes in though the side since I don't care for lid mounted returns.
