Hi, I was just wondering the minimal amount of grain for a 5 galon batch in a range of 5 to 7 abv, APA, IPA, Brown ales, Oatmeal stouts, etc

my IPA has right at about 12 pounds of pils, 2 row, and crystal and runs about 5.8% but that said what are your intentions? If your looking for recipe theres a gazillion and the efficiency (mines is typically around 82-85%) of your setup plays a part in the ABV as well not to mention what is appropriate for style (if your interested in such things)..

10# seems about right, however I'm wondering why you're asking this question. If you're trying to figure costs per batch, remember that it will vary depending on the malt. If it's to figure mash tun size, please don't build based on the minimum, you're going to want to make a bigger beer someday... Trust me.

While that's true, and I err on the side of caution when sizing my kettles (all 10G for 5 batches), if he's got a budget limitation, or already has a vessel for his mash tun he'd like to make work. He can plan on using DME when he goes bigger then 7-8%

You could probably get away with less than 10#, if you added a bunch of sugar...you didn't mention that it had to taste great...

Grain is cheap, I wouldn't worry about skimping on it,
