I was wondering if you can use Palmer's calculations to make mini-mash recipes? I don't have the space to go AG but I really like the mini-mash flavors (better than all-extract) and I want to start tinkering with my own recipes calculations.
The calculations he uses are in "how to brew" and it only references AG brewing.

There's a guide in the wiki for designing mini-mashes. The mashing process is the same, but batch sparging is the way to go.

I have an excel sheet that I created... I'll post a link today when I get home so you can download it if you like.

It calculates pretty much everything you need (IBU, SRM, ABV, Carbonation, Gravity, Temp corrections ect ...). It's also on the same page so you can print it on one page and follow the hope sked on it. I prefer to create my own really just to learn about the math and concepts.

there are homebrew software programs. Many of them have free trials. Some are just plain free like this one:

http://brew.reboritull.com/

I have been using this. It takes a little tweaking but works well. I have a mac, so I am limited in my options but this one works for pc, mac and unix. Will also help calculate mash water temps and amounts.

I have also used the free online beertools:

http://www.beertools.com

You have to register to use the calculator but it is free and works well. They also sell program that looks to be far more detailed which is also pc/mac friendly but the free version will get you started. This does not figure mash water though.

Another really basic free one is qbrew:

The other pc only pay ones are named promash or beersmith

Go to my signature and downoad my beer log... I uploaded my latest copy. The gray areas are not for data entry. Enter your data in any of the white areas.

Cheers
