This will be a strange question but here it goes. I have only done one kit brew and want to stay with kits till I get more comfortable with beer brewing. I enjoy the commercial mich ultra amber and was wondering if there is a kit that is out there that has a similar taste. I realize there will be a difference from home brew taste to commercial but anything close would work. Thanks you.

I think this might be closer. Never had that beer but it is a lager, do you have temp control for that? If not the linked kit has the option to use California lager yeast which can be fermented warmer.

If you're really trying to make an Ultra Amber, you need to shoot for a lower gravity and hop schedule than either linked kit will get you (I would prefer the linked ones though:) ). Their website says 4.0% ABV, 95 calories, williamette and "european" hops.

I would go with the 2nd kit linked to. I would hold back a pound of the LME, or better yet add an extra .8 gallons over what the recipe calls for. You shouldn't have headspace issues with a 6.5 gallon bucket, but watch to make sure you don't plug the airlock. Be ready with a blow off tube if the krausen reaches the bucket lid. The hops won't quite be the same, but at least they are in the same family. If you truly want it like an Ultra, you'd need less hop bite as well. The water dilution will help with this, but you may want to cut the bittering and aroma additions by another 1/4 if you want very little hop character.

I like the California lager yeast option fermented as cool as you can get it.

I'll chime in with the obligatory "Make an amber kit, then water it down with about 3 gallons of extra water." :p
