Measure a vessle is empty in order to stop the pump (automation)

I want to automate my herms so that when I've transfered from one vessle to another, it stops before the pump runs dry.

I'm pretty sure people here have experienced with various sensors and found something that works well for this. I've got a lot of ideas, but I'm looking for a realible, inexpensive, food safe and easy to clean.

Get a self priming pump?

You would need something like a float switch. Or something that can "read" the set level or when liquid becomes air.
