I used a rubber washer on the inside. I'm not positive if its the best choice, but I've seen others with it, and it works for me. I use a combination of the rubber on the inside, another rubber washer on the outside along with a steel washer and teflon tape on the threads of the copper coupling. The hole for my drain is just the right size also. I'm sure that helps.

Now insulating the cooler LID is another story. I'm having issues holding temp in my cooler and need to find some alternatives to that! Good luck!

Dont know about sealer (aquarium?) but you should get it to seal with the Oring ,just snug it down, dont put alot of torque on it,if its too tight,it will smash the Oring and it will leak. mine is less than hand tight and has never lost a drop.
