Just noticed that my LHBS stocks the Mandarina Bavaria hops, and after reading that they have a great Mandarin taste I'm wondering how best to use them.

#1 on my current list is a Citra/Mandarina American IPA
#2 would be a California Common (still not done one, but they always seem to be #2 on my list of next brews) probably Simcoe/Mandarina
#3 would be a simple Mandarina Pale Ale

Does anyone have any experience with this hop and its taste?

Does this look alright to you guys?

hey rico,

the malt bill looks fine to me.

a neutral yeast like 05 is good.

i would do it as a single hop beer. citra could be overpowering the mandarina bavaria.

focus on late additions and using stupid amounts is the way to go with mandarina bavaria.

cheers jan

I try to stay away from Citra as a bittering hop. I would use something like Warrior or Magnum for bittering and save the Citra for flavor/aroma.

As for Mandarina, it is kind of subtle. I used about 8 oz on a 3 gallon batch once and thought it was good, but not overly hoppy like I thought it would turn out. If I were to do it again, I would add a little Cascade, Centennial or maybe El Dorado. Mandarina does have a nice, unique orange-y flavor though

Thanks, I do have a couple of ounces of Galena and cascade in the freezer. Would the Galena be suitable for bittering, or do these risk dominating? I understand the Warrior and Magnum are a bit more subtle

***update new hop schedule***

Walrus...No Warrior so Magnum it is then...
Jan... Throwing in 30g for the dry hop...hope it will hit the nose like a tangerine...

10 g - Cascade, Type: Pellet, AA: 7.5, Use: Boil for 15 min, IBU: 10.02
5 g - Magnum, Type: Pellet, AA: 12.5, Use: Boil for 15 min, IBU: 8.35
10 g - Mandarina Bavaria, Type: Pellet, AA: 8.1, Use: Boil for 15 min, IBU: 10.82
