Has anyone tried making a starter with malt sugar? It is a form of maltose (I think) and available at Asian markets.

I need to make a starter and I'm out of DME. No time for a trip to the LHBS.

I had the same thought you had. I did an iodine test, though, and the kind that I bought was maltodextrin, which is not fermentable.

Only if I knew it didn't have preservatives or other additives in it, otherwise I would use corn sugar or table sugar.

It's malt extract. An easier route is to use bottled Malta soft drink as a starter. Dilute 2 parts Malta with 1 part water.

The local Asian market didn't have any of the malt sugar. I checked some of the hispanic markets but couldn't find any Malta Goya either.
