I was hoping to start my first all grain brew tomorrow but when looking in to making yeast start I realized i didnt order the DME to make the starter. I cant get any locally and ordering some would take a few days to come in.

Would it be ok if i went ahead with everything and took some of the wort from sparging make my starter? I would have to let the final batch sit in the fermentation bucket for a day or 2 before i could pitch it though. What is the process for creating a starter this way?

I've had a lot of luck using Malt based soft drinks to grow yeast. If you can find a grocery store that carries it grab a handful of bottles. I know I would be paranoid about leaving the wort un inoculated for a couple of days.

Do you need a starter (i.e. OG over 1.070 or old yeast)? If not, just pitch your yeast and don't worry about it. You'll still end up with great beer!

OG is around 1.078. Malt based drink? I think the target near me carries Malta soda, if that might work. I was also thinking of taking a half cup of my grains and doing a mini mash and using the wort from that to make the starter if that might work?

At 78 points you'll need a pretty big starter that might require more than a single step. As much as it sucks, I'd probably suggest delaying your brew day.

I've used Malta successfully, just check the ingredients. Should just be malt, hops and sugar. At 1.07 you want at least a 2 litre starter. You won't get that out of a half cup of grain, would be closer to %5 of your grain bill. That would work, just gonna take time to mash and boil.
