Hi everyone,

I'm getting ready to make a starter (have 1000ml flask) for a beer with an OG of 1.082 (extract kit). Just wanted to check and see if a 1000ml is large enough for a high gravity beer like this.

If not, any advice (besides buying a larger flask).

Thanks!

Is your flask 1000ml total or 2000ml and able to do a 1000ml starter? a stir plate will really help grow a larger starter for a smaller volume (ie more cells/start ml with starter) So stir plate. Failing that, just degassing a swirling as you go past it will also help more than just having it sit there.

I think you need a larger starter than 1000ml. MrMalty recomends larger than 1000ml - around 1500ml if you aerate well at start. http://www.mrmalty.com/calc/calc.html

Perhaps if you have a 2L plastic bottle, you can use that for your 'flask' assuming you aren't using a stir plate
