Mailing mead question.

Ok I've made a gallon of JAOM for my brother that lives in Tennessee, I'm in California. How do I mail it to him, without breaking any federal laws.

be sure you're sending him live 'active yeast samples' which are legal to ship

UPS or FedEx. You'll break company policy, not law.

Label as either Yeast samples or vinegar. Never ship USPS.... only ship FedEx or UPS.

Best way, go on to UPS or Fedex website and create a shipping label and print it off. One of the questions is "what are you shipping?"...I usually put down hot sauce or snow globes. This way if they hear any sloshing, it's not unusual. Then when you drop off at a shipping location, when it's already labeled, they don't ask anything. Competitive brewers have been doing this for years to send beers to comps around the country.
