So I got up early this morning ready to brew my mocha cream stout that I designed... Well got into a rush when milling my grains and didn't realize someone was playing with it and set it from my medium crush to...... FLOURED!!! So needless to say I added about a pound of rice hulls and even then it still turns into concrete in the bottom of my brew magic... So what I started at 9am and should be inoculating at 2pm is still steadily dripping away from the MLT into the boil kettle... Something should have told me to check it like I usually do but got in a hurry and now look where I am... Definitely very frustrated and I'm sure my efficiency will fall out the bottom on this brew but just goes to show me that even though I've brewed 100+ all grain batches, patience, checking equipment and rechecking is the key to an easy going brew day... If I'm finished by 8pm (exaggeration hopefully) I will be surprised..

Your efficiency should go up, the finer the crush the more surface area there is for the ezymmes to attach. Not sure how flour would work but you should get a great BG... may be a PITA to sparge

This exact same thing happened to me last year, only I didn't crush the grains, I bought them crushed from northern brewer...somebody got a little carried away - anyhow it turned to concrete. I had to dump out the mash tun into a large plastic bin I have TWICE to get past complete stuck sparges. Nightmare, it took me a good 3 hours to finally drain/rinse the grains.

* note - I sent a pic of the "mud" in the tun to northern brewer and once again the great company they are - sent me the kit again for free plus a free pint glass for my troubles.

Finally got it all sparged out after about two hours of cursing... I decided to collect every drop of wort I could get to hopefully help my efficiency

Then tragedy struck again... Like an idiot I didn't check to make sure I had enough propane... Boiling it down and ran out.... I definitely failed the brew God's today..

Ground hog day..:D

FWIW my last brew day was one of my worst as well..and it was a simple SMASH for crying out loud....it happens
