I am fermenting a batch of Mr. Beer Amber Ale - published ABV of 5.9%

I measured the OG before adding the yeast = 1.044
Now (17 days fermenting) = 1.023

1.044 - 1.023 = 0.021 * 100 = 2.1%

Is this the correct way to determine ABV?
If so... does 2.1% after 17 days sound right?

As always, Thanks for the advice

A better formula is (Og-FG) x 131 = approx ABV.

Still, the FG is pretty high and doesn't seem to be finished.

I get the biggest kick out of your "handle". My wife is from Escanaba, MI so the U.P. is always being discussed - especially the winter weather.

By the way.... I'm sure you've heard of the singing group from the UP... The Yoopers? Funny for sure

Oh, yes, I know of the Yoopers. They haven't been around lately- I don't know if they still perform but I don't think so.

I'd check the SG again in a few days, and see if it's dropping. It sound be quite a bit lower than it is, but I"m not sure what the problem could be.
