Are they prequels or re-imaginings?

I felt like the first one was a prequel, but now the second one has a new Khan.

Either way, I really like the movies. I loved the old show and Next generation or whatever, but the old movies are awful....for the most part.

I liked the first movie in the "reboot" franchise okay, but I thought the second entry was a little weak. Poor character development, lots of plot holes, poor pacing, etc. I'm hoping the third installment will be better.

Overall the reboot franchise is going better than I anticipated. I've been a Star Trek fan (all series except for DS9, anyway) since I was a kid, and I had pretty low expectations going into it. The older movies were very hit-and-miss, so I guess the bar wasn't exactly high. Star Trek I, IV, V, Insurrection, and Nemesis were bad. Star Trek II, III, VI, Generations, and First Contact were pretty good. (IMHO only).

I was pretty young when the original movies came out. I remember them somewhat, but found re-watching them as an adult unbearable.

I appreciate your specifics! I may re-try the old ones you recommend.

Yes, I'd recommend First Contact, a NG movie. But I completely agree, CD3, that the reboot movies, both Star Trek and Into Darkness, were more enjoyable than any of the earlier movies.

I liked the first movie a lot, then started watching oringal episodes on Netflix. My appreciation of the movie is definitely decreased. It is not much like the source material at all, in tone, pace, or even the same genre. It is more a good action movie set in space that used the name of characters and places to fit into StarTrek universe. Maybe it is to nipicky because I am currently watching the originals for the first time.

Into Darkness however was much worse, it was just one long CGI action sequence after another. I was bored by most of it. Abrahms answered a question about the final act with "I don't know if we needed to crash a starship and destroy most of LA. But we could" <something like that>. That sums up my feelings toward the whole thing. It is like that line from Imagination land episode of south park:

Governement: Those aren't stories or even ideas, just special effects
Michael Bay: I don't understand the difference.

Oh and Cheezy to your original question: They are reimagings that took place after Enterprise, but before the originals. With Nero rewriting history we enter a new timeline, so that there are currently 2 StarTrek universes going on at this point: These movies (and Enterprise) vs all other previous media.

Even though I liked these movies, as a non trekkie, I realized that there would be some die hard fans of the originals who would HATE a lot about these new ones.

I like JJ Abrams, but I swear to the gods, if he shows one more lens flare, I'm gonna reroute his internal organs

I got hooked as a kid on TOS, but it's mostly unwatchable to me these days

I catch TNG on BBC America once in a while and enjoy those still

They're both reimagined AND prequels, as was said before, due to Nero's alteration of the timeline. I'll have to admit I was a bit skeptical at 1st; I grew up with Star Trek in all it's versions & spin-offs. I own every Star Trek movie ever made on VHS & DVD and have the entire OS on DVD. Yes, I've even been to a Trekcon. That's where I met Gates McFadden (yes, really).

Anyway, I was really surprised at how good the the casting was for the new Trek, Chris pine was good, but needs to settle into the role I think. Karl urban made a VERY good Dr. McCoy, Simon Pegg easily rivals James Doohan for the role of Mr. Scott & given some time, might even be better.

Jon Cho is a superior Sulu, hands down. Zachary Quinto is good, but could be so much better, his portrayal of Spock seemed much less gay in Into Darkness. Then there's Zoe Saldana. She's hot, no doubt, but is she Uhura? She's no Nichelle Nichols, but maybe she'll get better. BTW, Benedict Cumberbatch makes for a great bad guy, but he's just too white to portray Kahn Noonien Singh. I was quite pleased that they had Majel Barret-Roddenberry do the computer voice, She's become an almost iconic fixture on all Federation starships.

Now I understand that these roles are new for all the new Trek cast, the OS cast has had decades to explore & understand their characters. Writers have had decades to flesh-out the characters & develop back stories for them all. The new guys aren't bad, but they have some very big shoes to fill & there are some VERY critical fans out there who expect a certain standard from anyone or anything associated with the Star Trek franchise. They'll expect the cast & crew to measure up to & hopefully surpass those standards.

Now with all that being said, I'll have to sum it all up by saying that I enjoyed both films & was pleasantly surprised by both of them. If & when they make another Star Trek film, I'll go see it & then buy it on DVD.
Regards, GF. :mug:

You wanna talk GHEY?? ;)

The little Parent Teacher talks with old Spock make me want to be sick.

Yeahhhh........the Adventures of the Young Captain Kirk sounded a lot more ingenious than "Lets re-invent the whole thing again" ala Batman, Godzilla, Superman, etc.

Getting less amused by the minute...

I liked them a lot. I went in knowing they are a kind of re-imagining. I expected them to be different.

Honestly, could you make a re-imagining and sell it if it's the same thing? Of course not.

There is a LOT of the same old stuff that they draw from. Enough to satisfy the hard core Trekkers. And there is more action and hot (and talented) new actors to satisfy the newer, younger fans.

I think the only thing I didn't care for in the second of the new films is the continual action from about halfway through to the end. Otherwise, I thought they did a great job with the story and I especially liked the way they offered a few scenes with different actors doing what was done in the previous movies.

My only wish is that if/when another movie is made, they don't take the easy route and pile action scene after action scene into it. I think the fans deserve something to talk about and argue over, even if it messes with the original canon or the science aspect isn't technically possible (It's science FICTION, after all).

And finally, how awesome would it be to have a re-imagined Next Generation??!! :rockin:

is exactly why they reset the timeline. resets the canon too, so they're free to do just about anything they want

The idea of anyone but Patrick Stewart playing Capt. Jean-Luc Picard scares the hell out of me. :D Fortunately, it doesn't look like he's really aged much since his TNG days, so maybe he could continue to play JLP in the reboot. :p

I respect the hell out of Stewart, but I think he could be replaced. In fact, I think he SHOULD be replaced. He still looks pretty good, for sure (And his wife, is totally hot too, BTW), but I think there is no way they are going to be able to make him look younger than he did back at the start of TNG. I would really like to see a prequel to TNG to see how the characters managed to be assigned the Enterprise in the first place.

Remember that at one time it was sacrilege for anyone to play Kirk except for William Shatner.

What would be cool is seeing the wide spectrum of personalities of TNG re-imagined. Just like TOS, and maybe even more so. Imagine a new yet familiar crew of Geordi LaForge, Data, William Riker, Worf, Beverly Crusher (maybe not Wesley, though..;), Deanna Troi, and possibly even a Tasha Yar!

Actually, what I would like to see even better is a re-imagined TNG where they are the EVIL characters (But of course don't know it) and go around pirating Federation ships, looting and pillaging planets, etc. Maybe the TOS re-imagined crew could be chasing them down to bring them to justice. It could be a way to tie the TNG crew in with the TOS crew.

OR, they could be like Firefly! Once a proud member of the Federation, but disenchanted with the Federation's ever-increasing hold on freedom, the USS Enterprise and her crew become renegades, traveling the galaxy, trying to survive and helping people along the way. Maybe they could meet up with an evil Voyager at some point.

I'm fairly positive that Patrick Stewart is some sort of ageless wizard, as is evidenced by the photo I posted earlier. I think if he wanted to make himself appear younger using dark sorcery, he could easily do so. :rockin:

You've got some interesting ideas for a TNG reboot though, maybe you should pitch a screenplay to Mr. Abrams. :mug:

I would, but I don't want to depress him with my impeccable creativity.

I *could* write some fan fiction set in an alternate timeline. I tend to get sidetracked when I think about plotlines. First, it's a dark ST setting, then pretty soon everyone's naked in the holodeck.

Star Trek: Deep Space 69.

Another massive star trek fan here. My beef with the latest one was they saved Kirk with in the same movie. I might be alone in this but I thought having Spock die in Wrath of Khan was brilliant.

I can't say this at home when the wife is around but I'm loving the short skirt uniforms! Waaaay better than the jumpsuits or pant/shirt combos from TNG/DS9/etc.:)

I think Homer is on to something with the whole darker Star Trek imagining. That's what DS9 was supposed to be, but it didn't quite turn out that way. I really like the idea of going a different direction for a new spin-off. I'd like to see one that follows an alien ship/crew/civilization. Maybe a Vulcan series or a Klingon series, liberally sprinkled with cameos from more recognizable federation characters, I think it could work.

I've been wanting someone to make a Voyager movie since the 2nd season of the series. I know, they made the double length "movie" that aired once on TV, then disappeared, but I'd like to see a REAL Voyager movie, in the theater & on DVD after.

If they want to explore alternate timelines & alternate realities, there are already opportunities for those, including various episodes from TOS, STNG, DS9, Enterprise & Voyager.

Of course I expect them to continue with the newest incarnation of Trek, but there's no reason they couldn't start a new TV series. Then there's all the Trek stories in print form to work with & maybe adapt to the big screen. It would be interesting to have a fan fiction contest, with the best story being adapted to the big screen, or at least 1 episode in a series.
Just my 2 cents worth. Regards, GF.
