They're both reimagined AND prequels, as was said before, due to Nero's alteration of the timeline. I'll have to admit I was a bit skeptical at 1st; I grew up with
Star Trek in all it's versions & spin-offs. I own every
Star Trek movie ever made on VHS & DVD and have the entire OS on DVD. Yes, I've even been to a Trekcon. That's where I met Gates McFadden (yes, really).
Anyway, I was really surprised at how good the the casting was for the new Trek, Chris pine was good, but needs to settle into the role I think. Karl urban made a VERY good Dr. McCoy, Simon Pegg easily rivals James Doohan for the role of Mr. Scott & given some time, might even be better.
Jon Cho is a superior Sulu, hands down. Zachary Quinto is good, but could be so much better, his portrayal of Spock seemed much less gay in
Into Darkness. Then there's Zoe Saldana. She's hot, no doubt, but is she Uhura? She's no Nichelle Nichols, but maybe she'll get better. BTW, Benedict Cumberbatch makes for a great bad guy, but he's just too white to portray Kahn Noonien Singh. I was quite pleased that they had Majel Barret-Roddenberry do the computer voice, She's become an almost iconic fixture on all Federation starships.
Now I understand that these roles are new for all the new Trek cast, the OS cast has had decades to explore & understand their characters. Writers have had decades to flesh-out the characters & develop back stories for them all. The new guys aren't bad, but they have some very big shoes to fill & there are some VERY critical fans out there who expect a certain standard from anyone or anything associated with the
Star Trek franchise. They'll expect the cast & crew to measure up to & hopefully surpass those standards.
Now with all that being said, I'll have to sum it all up by saying that I enjoyed both films & was pleasantly surprised by both of them. If & when they make another
Star Trek film, I'll go see it & then buy it on DVD.
Regards, GF.
