Has anyone here experimented much with licorice root? I added 2oz. to a 5 gallon batch of a robust porter and it seems a little overbearing. Any suggestions on how much to add to a 5 gallon batch?

Thanks,
Ben

I haven't experimented with licorice, I always associate that flavor with soda.

Are you talking pure root, extract, etc (I don't know of any other forms). Are you steeping it, just adding it boil, primary, secondary?

I used it in my Belgian Triple. It was in shaved root form. I used a half teaspoon with 15mins left in the boil. The beer has a wonderful aroma and flavor. Not too strong and also helps with head retention.
