In the description for the carbon filter kit that MoreBeer sells they state that the filter should be disassembled and stored dry when not in use. That's what I intend to do with the filter setup that I just put together with parts from Lowes.
 
remember that you can contact your local council / city people and ask them for a water report to get the chemical breakdown. Just explain to them that you require it for making beer and they are happy to provide. Here in Hobart I got it back within days with the person sending it wishing me happy brewing!

I had a similar experience in England about 30 years ago.
My first request for a water analysis (which did not explain why I wanted it) was ignored.
My second request (which explained that I wanted it for home brewing) got me a reply by return mail giving me more information that I could understand.
Nowadays, you can often get great water reports off the Internet if you have city water, but you will need to send samples to labs, if you have well water.
