So I'm brewing my first all grain soon and decided to try a more robust porter but now I can't decide whether to use cara-pils or white wheat (or both) malt to add some head retention. Do I even need to add either of these? And if so which would be better?

carapils (dextrine) malt. If they would just rename it "Get Some Head Malt" this question would never pop up again. :mug:

He said "pop up". *insert Beavis & Butthead laugh*

Now... Back on topic!

Good answer. So what's the advantage of using white wheat malt over cara pils?

Only thing I can think of is the flavor difference. If I understand correctly, anything with "cara" in it is going to add a bit of a caramel/sweet flavor while wheat moves flavor more towards a, well, wheat beer flavor. I'm a bit of a noob on that, but it's what I've inferred from posts here.
