And now, Alesong is killing it! And nobody outside the west coast gives a ****!

I really need to make it there next time I'm out that way. Brian was actually a student of mine at UO back when I was in grad school, cool to see him and the rest of the Alesong crew having success.

I'd try their stuff. It's all over shelves around here, but it is way too pricey.

I don't trade, so people from out of my region not liking beers from my region has never been a big deal.

I definitely think it’s a good thing. One of the best parts about the Portland beer scene is that we don’t have to wait in line for good beer (unless you really, really want to wait in line for Great Notion cans, and really, only for Double Stack, which I don’t even like very much).

I’m very glad it hasn’t spread in Portland. We now see lines at Fremont, Reubens, Holy Mountain, Cloudburst and Urban Family.

Praise Jeebus that Floodland went with membership/online sales to prevent stupid hype lines.

Was that the original space or the first addition. I remember heading there for bottles of fear and trembling in dec 2010 after the heady topper bottle release at the alchemist brewpub. The retail space was 4’x6’ and was a 3’ wooden wall that separated you from the rest of the brewery. My biggest regret was not having more cash that day. Shaun had bottles of 3F 50th for sale for like $150 a bottle
Those days before they started accepting cards, one time I had to hit like 3 different ATMs cause they all had limits lol

Remember when imperialking opened that up with me way back in the day, and even when it was fresh it was kind of meh. I'd take umbrage with the "really well crafted" portion of your statement as it tasted like a European RIS (harshly roasted / astringent).
Actually when I finally landed this it already had a good few years on it and I thought we all were extremely impressed with it. It was something I had no regrets going after and always wanted to try it again (though I doubt I would still enjoy it the same nowadays).

Getting lost trying to find Upright is a rite of passage. I went there for the first time on a Sunday while my wife was at some craft thing a block over. And yes, everything else in the building was closed and there was no sign out. I was confused as ****. I gave up, wandered back over to the craft fair and then some old lady was like "oh you're looking for the brewery in the basement aren't you? Go down the elevator and take a right, it really is down there."

giphy.gif

I too got lost looking for Upright the first time I went there.

You lazy ***** use the elevator?

There are stairs?!?

Wait, is it a firepole? And then you have to crawl out the windows?

It's actually a garbage chute.

A couple years ago, I was at HotD solo on a random Saturday to tick some From the Wood or the other. Don't recall, exactly. Struck up a convo with the dude next to me, who happened to be up from LA on a solo beer tourist trip. I mentioned that I was going to Upright next. He was like, "What's Upright?" And I was all, "Bruh. You haven't heard of Upright?" And he was all, "@nahdog." And I was all, "I will take you there." And he was all, "@yeahdog."
So, we drive up to Upright. It's Saturday, so everything on the first floor, including the coffee shop, is closed. We walk in and I'm like, "you have cash, right?" He did. So then I proceed to lead him down the little-known stairs route. About halfway down, it occurred to me that he very likely was thinking I'm going to mug/murder him in some abandoned basement.
Then Upright miraculously appeared & we enjoyed beer & a couple of laughs & he lived to drink another beer.

I would have beaten him up and stolen his money.

I think the BA stouts are around $17/500ml here and the BA sours are a little less. Vanilla Rhino Suit and Rackhouse Reserve are A+, IMO.

I am so sad I only bought two bottles.

Just bought a Vanilla Rhino Suit. You guys are correct. Fantastic. Going to buy a few more tomorrow.

Last Petite Sour 750ml I had was Blackberry and opened it 2 years ago. Still pretty tasty but certainly the funk took over (not a bad thing) and lost a lot of the fruit.
a friend opened a Petite Sour Blackberry (May 2012) tonight and it had a distinctly poopy nose with a very muted color and taste, but definitely not awful. he still has a Batch 1 that will likely get opened in the near future, curious to see how it is doing.

tonight was vintage night with a friend with a deep cellar. 2012 Supplication, Consecration, and Sanctification. Consecration was flat and done for, Supplication was ok, and Sanctification was surprisingly great. also had batch 1 (2014) Tweak that was still hot fire. 2012 Allagash FV13 was not so good along with Hellshire I (2011).

white wax EC Eclipse (2011?) was remarkable last time I had it.

The Kriekenbloesem and Monster Tones were pretty incredible while Dipped in Sauce was a total dud (IMO). the sleepers were Guava Oro from Good Beer and Mirabelle Blackberry and Spontane Framboise from Wild Mind.

We still have a lot of 2012 Eclipse at The Upper Lip. $22/bottle for onsite too. I don’t think there’s a better deal anywhere for Eclipse.

For future reference, this statement is why you and I could likely never be friends.

Every time I hit a rut and realize I hate +90% of the new beer I try, I dip in the cellar and drink something that puts a smile on my face. Maybe my enjoyment is less about the liquid and more reminiscing about better times... like when milkshake ipas were something you made at home in a blender when you were blackout drunk and not something you stood in line for to pay $30+ a 4-pack

In one of the Gang Bang BIFs like 5 years ago our group got into a bunch of stouts and blending up candy bars into them with a mini food processor.

Who'd have thought we'd just have been ahead of the game, and not a bunch of blacked out fatties goofin off.

Hunaphu blended with Mounds bars though is ******* legit.

Here's the inside:

But the inside, as beat as it was, was not really the problem. It's pretty hard to describe how wild the entrance to that place was without pictures... Think "abandoned mental hospital" style weird

That picture is the nicest possible angle you could have taken.

Buried in a very old and very urban industrial park with pretty much no legal parking, a long walk through a run down building just to find the place, and going to the bathroom was like a 5 minute adventure full of turns only to end up in a facility straight out of Trainspotting where you held your breath and touched nothing.

I seriously thought my wife was about to divorce me after the first time she returned from the bathroom.

Good beer though.
