I was sure I had some e-mails about that whole weird De Struise auction thing, but now I can't find them. It did cause me to run across Alen's flickr, though, which is quite a trip down memory lane: https://www.flickr.com/photos/alenmirz/
Christ, who is that guy?

Also, on the "3F OG is the best" thing, I opened a 2013 today after having a seasons set last weekend and I'll be damned if I didn't think the regular ole '13 OG was better. Funny how that works.

I love the random Cuvée Rene Kriek bottles mixed in with the typical old school whales. Something that is now a good but budget shelfie next to the likes of Crianza.

I think you just made my mind up...

In 2 weeks I was planning on opening an armand set. I was already tossing around the idea of having my wife pour them so I dont know which is which. I think im gonna add an ‘11/12 OG to the mix.

My first "whale" in my estimation was Cherry Rye. Snagged it in exchange for a 2009 blue wax Gratitude and I was on top of the world.

Those releases were the best. Oldest killshot I still manage to have on my phone was from a July 2010 captain Lawrence release. Don’t remember if it was castleton or flaming fury.

That pic sure takes me back. I went to their Rosso e Marrone release back in Feb/Mar 2010 and on that day, that wall looked very similar except for maybe more Dark Lord. I have the pic on an old laptop somewhere. The one thing I remember about that release was you had to have a ticket from one of those deli please take a number ticket dispensers. If you got there late, forget it. Luckily my friend knew a local who got some tickets early on. :)

This makes me feel much better about never having seasons but having a couple 13, 14, and 15 3f ogs on deck.

Something I was thinking about earlier today:

Those Armand seasonals were sold what 6 years ago? I can still recall my thought process back then in buying them. “**** thats expensive but I really like 3f. I guess ill buy one of each as they are released and give them a shot.”

“Wait, the price is so high because the brewery is using the sales as a fundraiser to build a new brewery/recover from an accident that destroyed their inventory? **** it, im all in on multiples.”

I passed so many times on the sets due to the price.

And here we are.

Those tickets were the biggest bunch of ********. The people who got there early would take like 10 tickets a person and then just pass them out to friends when they arrived. I only got bottles at one release because the people I was with knew so many people.

back in the 90s this was my beast, because brooklyn monster and choc stout just wouldn't cut it anymore and i had already bought up all the local Hardy's ale. Not a 'whale' for many, but for us it was magical. purchased in 96.

drank it for the 1999/2000 new year change over while hundreds of miles away from civilization with my siblings. Just us, a campfire, and some beer. A lovely time.

also found a michael jackson article about it that contains so many of those mid 90s beer feels. lol at explaining bottle-conditioning and maris otter malts.

I regret not buying 12 of each.
Legitimately one of two beer regrets I have. The other is not buying a bottle of Cantillon or old Tomes every time I walked into a bottle shop for the years they sat on shelves. Oh and not buying all the first blend Tilquin when it came out and was turding up shelves. I guess that's 3.

Walked into Johnnys in Rome on my 1 year honeymoon back in 2013. Cantillon lining the shelves. I bought only a St Lam and a Rose and had the guy talk me into buying a Panil. I could have walked out with 2 cases of Lam/LPG/LPK.

Bet you could find one on eBay UK, for old times' sake.

They aren't that hard to find, but Bass Kings Ale 1902 was probably the beer I coveted the most.

Landed one and ticked it. Not bad for 115 years old, but not good either. Very cool experience though.
God, I know I was hungover AF, but the one jedwards brought to #deathbylargeformat made me instant gag. It was gross af. Little barleywine flavor, lots of musty cork. I also had one of the first pours, so mine was probably mostly cork.

Yeah, after spending a number of years around 2006-2008 scoring the oldest beers I could find (old k&b, TH, John Smiths, bass, etc) im down to one nip of TH 1980. They were all wonderful to try, but im done with that adventure for now.

Best old bottle I had was a sherborne abbey ale from around 72.

Yeah, I'm down to 1 bottle of 1935 Ind Coope and Allsopps Jubilee Ale. Probably crack it soon.
