Why does it always seem you need to learn the hard way? I remember one time, years ago, learning to make sure that the valve on the bottling bucket was in the closed position after losing one or two gallons onto the floor while siphoning my beer in.
Now I've purchased a new plastic Big Mouth Bubbler with a valve on the bottom for transferring and sure enough, after my first brew day in the New House and the first since August I dumped half my batch onto the basement floor because the valve was in the open position.
Oops.... but luckily I way overshot my efficiency and just dumped some water in to make up for the lost volume
