I am designing an IPA recipe for the first time and wanted to see what some more experienced brewers thought. I will be using a hopback for the first time as well and am thinking about using a couple ounces of cascade, citra or simcoe for that. I am really looking for the hop aroma to standout and not just the bitterness. I also have not decided if I want to dry hop yet. I am trying to avoid any type of grassy notes and am not sure how much aroma the hopback is going to provide. I will be brewing with all whole leaf hops as of right now. Here is what I have come up with based on available grain/hops but I wouldn't have a problem getting something different if needed. Let me know what you think!

My question is, what kind of hop aroma are you looking for? Hops run a wide spectrum of aroma. With that bill you are looking at floral with some citrus and spice. Neither cascade or willamette are really intense hops. Also, I'm sure systems vary as do personal taste, but I just brewed a 12 gallon IPA that I used 15 ounces of hops in the final 15 minutes, including 9 ounces after flameout.

Late hopping IPAs I generally do a 30 minute charge 5 minute charge, then flameout. Today I did

2 oz total @30 min Apollo & ctz
4oz 5 min Amarillo
4 oz citra 4 oz centennial flameout, drop to 180, steep for 30 min.

Dry hop with 3-4oz hops per keg.

I'm looking for floral with citrus/pine. The amount of hops is something I'm struggling with as well since this will be my first use of the hopback and I'm not sure exactly what it is going to add.

One of my favorite combinations is cascade, centennial and Simcoe. If you wanted to up the citrus character you could add in some Citra (though that could lend some tropical notes) or chinook.

As for the amounts, I'd suggest treating the hops as if the hop back isn't there. Use it to add extra aroma, and see exactly what it adds.

Thanks for the input. I did pick up some citra to use possibly in the hopback or dry hop....so many choices
