I have a 55 galon mash tun the is a PIA to scoop empty. I tried a shop vac last time and it worked great, but i had to empty it four times. I was thinking of using an old 55 gallon plastic drum and putting the hose from vac to one side of the lid and running a second vac hose from lid in drum for cleaning out the 100lbs+ mess. anyone ever used a drum to increase the size of their vac capacity? Will this work?

That will work. I use that process at work to empty large water softener tanks when I need to replace the material. It will also protect your shop vac by eliminating the possibility of getting grains in the motor.

Essentially the same thing as a shop vacuum dust separator, like this:

Never been a fan of sucking spent grains into a shop vac (just thinking about the nasties) but putting one of these in between should lessen the lingering odor issue...

Cheers!
