I am going to brew my first lager this weekend. Since lager yeasts usually don't create a krausen (I think?), would it be possible to primary ferment a lager in a 5 gallon carboy?

It will create a krausen it just won't be as much as an ale (unless you ferment it too warm). I do all my beers in 5 gal carboys, ales and lagers.

Use a blow off tube and you should be fine. What are you going to use for your secondary? If you have to buy a secondary why not get a 6 gallon for your primary and use the 5 gallon for the secondary?

I was going to use a keg for my secondary. I'm worried that 6 gallon carboy will be to large so I want to use a 5 gallon carboy. I live in Florida and it's hard to get temperatures low enough for lagers without a refrigerator.
