Today's LA/OC thread is like the SD thread on a slow day:

Back when I first got into craft beer I was dating a girl who was going to UCLA, so I’d make the trek up to LA every couple of weeks – finding good beer was like trying to find a gap in traffic during rush hour. At least Torrance and other nearby cities have started to build up their breweries.

My understanding is that a big part of this is the city of LA made the permitting process very difficult. Which is why places like Torrance have become a bit of a hotspot for brewing. Cheaper and easier to run a beer business there. But I think things have gotten a bit better (or at least a few places have managed to fight through the red tape and open shop). Sounds like there is a lot more to come in the next year or so.

Yeah, the city of LA definitely does not make it easy...but I guess we will see what happens with Dry River, Iron Triangle, and Arts District Brewing(who just did a collab at Three Weavers)...

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that there is just so much better beer in the area now. Not that long ago it was just Eagle Rock and Craftsman.

We need to get some more OC folks contributing too. Want to hear some thoughts about the new Good Beer Company bottles...
Roble 34 is awesome, viejo is great, vivo has some off flavor that lowers it to just good. The bravos were great dry hopped Brett beers.
I'll mention again that it's my family's brewery so I would suggest you form your own opinion.
The tart oro (draft only so far) tasted like New Zealand white wine. Super tropical and vinous. I really liked it out of a growler from the sister-in-law, but I guess it will not please everyone.

and 109 breweries, hell since that time they probably gained more breweries than LA and OC have total... combined
Yeah but 90% of those breweries are utter garbage. It would be interesting to see what happens when the bubble bursts.

No it's not. I don't know why the world has gone Alanis Morissette on the word "literally."
Because it can now be used figuratively instead of literally for some stupid ******* reason.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/literally

We're chatty fuckers. Though at least 40 of those pages are some ******** who reminisce about living in east county back in the day.
Don't forget all those posts in which we call out some shady motherfuckers and they try to throw down on us, only for them to get shamed out of the thread with tail between their legs.

I have to say, I'm starting to seek out more and more stuff from you guys up north.

Speaking of which, we're starting to get Bottle Logic bottles down here. Any of them worth purchasing?

as someone who lives in the IE and travels all over SoCal for work I follow both this thread and San Diego. Of all the breweries in SD I find I only frequent 8 or 10. There is some great beer in the LA/OC area as well. I go by Bottle Logic and Noble on a regular basis and although I haven't made it to the breweries yet, I seek out and purchase bottles from Smog City and El Segundo quite often. (Love me some Hammerland!). Phantom Carriage is on my must visit list as well. Thinking about trying to make it to some of the LABW festivities.

Edited the double quote out. Stupid phone!

Mmmmm Bottle Logic! There two offerings at Copperversary were among the best I tasted all day! Look for their BA Stout -> Fundamental Observation which is being released June 30 and will have limited distribution. Their collab with Arizona Wilderness called Passionfruit Dragon, also rocked and will be bottled at a future date.

Bruery, Noble and Bottle Logic are my top three go to breweries in OC ... Pretty cool they are all within a 15 minute drive of each other.

Just a heads up for those of you with too much money ... TAPS is opening their third location in Irvine today (yay) and will have 60 bottle of Remy's Pappy available for on-site consumption ... $60/bottle ... heard there's already a line of hipster neckbeard ***** 35 deep :D

Hey all, any LABW events on either weekend that would be worth making the trek from SD for?

Best events Im seeing right now are:

Cellarmaker at Hermosillo - Tues
Sour night at Hermosillo - Wed
Cellarmaker/RB/Sante at Beachwood - Wed
Meeting of the Guilds at Naja's - Wed
Walker's Wild Ride at Beer Belly/Blue Palms - Fri
Night of Living Barrel at Phantom - Sat(27th)
Monkish/Beachwood at Glendale Tap - Sun(28th)

Oh and the Smog City 'rarest of the rare' event...although I'll probably avoid that since it will most likely be packed.

That Night of the Living Dead event caught my eye when I read the calendar. Hoping to make it out for at least that.

Going to be down that way this weekend. Looking at maybe hitting some place new (to me). What's the consensus on Highland Park Brewing? Any other suggestions for newish spots, either breweries or bars? Beachwood LB has been our stand by down there but we might branch out this trip.

LA area spots that seem to be getting the most buzz (not including Beachwood of course) are -> Highland Park, Phantom Carriage, El Segundo (tasty hoppy beers here), Smog City and Monkish ... they all seem worthy of fighting the 5/405 traffic.

This^^^^

I'd add MacLeod Brewing to that list if you're into traditional British styles. If you're coming down the 101, check out Institution Ales in Camarillo.
