Just ordered 8 ounces of Kohatu. Looking to do a smash pale ale.

I always do my smash brews with American 2-row. But, have been toying around with the idea of marris otter. Any suggestions?

Going to do a ten gallon brew. Have my hop additions in mind. Just stumped on wether to get gutsy and try a different grain!

Marris otter or American 2-row, and why?

Why so? Trust me sounds a little sketchy. I'm not a big malty pale ale guy. I like a light to medium body with juicy hop presence in my pales.

Sounds sketchy? How so? Essentially it's a base 2-row that is slightly darker and has a bit more malt. Think of it as a Canadian Maris Otter. At least that's the closest thing I can compare to. I am using it as my base malt for everything and I know breweries that are doing the same...

Thank you! Didn't mean to offend, I was just commenting on the "trust me," portion of your post. Generally speaking when someone says that, be leary! ;)

You know, it just hit me after my last post. Not being a huge malty beer fan, am I better sticking to the marris otter as the middle ground. Or is the Canadian still going to give me a clean malt presence that will showcase the Kohatu hops?

I use MO on a lot of my IPA, specifically a very nice Nelson and Citra smash. You could even go with Golden Promise which I started using now, I am also not a big malty guy.

I've SMaSHed 2 row, Munich, Vienna, Full Pint, Northwest Pale malt, and Marris Otter. MO is my favorite SMaSH grain, lends more body to the beer and a pleasant nutty flavor.

I blended Kohatu and Citra in a recent batch with heavy late additions. It came out excellent. Highly recommend Kohatu.
