I've always used Kingsford charcoal. Great stuff. Recently Home Depot sold a 44 lb bag for $8-16. I bougt a few bags. I like Kingsford charcoal Always worked well for me. This new stuff they are almost giving away sucks.

Is it a new kind they came out with or just something Home Depot had on sale? It might just be that it is really old or was exposed to moisture or something.

You too, huh? Took me 3/4 bag to heat, I say again HEAT, pre cooked brats. Took another 3/4 bag to cook 3 ribeyes to medium rare, and it took about 40 minutes.

Stubbs is the best.

Wow! Haven't had this problem yet. I purchased a bag of the hickory infused last week and it is fine.

I hwd two bags that absolutely sucked. the third has been okay. Smoked a 8 lb pork loin with less than a chimneys worth..

I always use lump charcoal anyways, but my friend had this same issue at a cookout we had recently... he did everything right and that stuff flat out would not burn right.

I may have to revoke your Cheesehead card . . . please tell me you meant "simmered in beer and onions just prior"

It was deer camp, I brought the "charcoal" and a friend brought the "brats." Come on pumbaa, you know me better than that! :D

I cursed him almost as much as the "charcoal"

Very strange. I recently bought a bunch of Kingsford when it was so cheap at HD for the smoker and have had NO trouble with temps being quite high even with only a few briquettes.

So I'm wondering WHY it "sucks."

Thank goodness! You and me (and Pumbaa) worried. Pre-cooked brats are like precooked macaroni and cheese (or whatever that package stuff is with the powdered "cheese"). When you said pre-cooked, I pictured you opening a package of fake brats and were going to give your friends and family a fake deer camp.

We rarely buy charcoal, but we need some for Thanksgiving. Does quality really matter that much? I mean, as long as it gets hot and stays hot, that's all we need. I guess if it won't light and stay lit that would be a big problem, though.

Sounds to me like it got wet/damp somewhere along the way. I wonder if HD stored it outside in the rain or something before you got it??? I have over 500 lbs. of Kingsford Blue in my garage & it's been working like a champ. Cheers, and Happy Brewing & BBQ'ing!!!

Maybe the charcoal was moist. I was just suprised how slowly and unevenly it burned. I bought the large 22lb bags (I meant 22 in the orginal post) before from HD and they were fine. It's worked well over the years, I'll give them another try.

I had the same thing happen with one bag this summer. Took for ever to get going in the chimney and didn't seem to burn as hot as usual.

I threw away the rest of that bag and figured it had been damp or something and didn't have any problems with the others I bought.

I always stock up for the smoker when they have their big sales once or twice a year. :mug:

Lately I have started disliking Kingsford as well. I generally like natural lump, but sometimes I'll buy briquettes for whatever reason. Kingsford seems to burn out fast and leaves a ton of ash behind. I have picked up a few bags of Royal Oak and I really like it. It has a smokier and cleaner smell as soon as it ignites and leaves less ash. Plus I believe it is usually cheaper than Kingsford when not on sale.

I'm itching to burn through the 40lbs of Kingford I got for cheap from HD.

I tend to mix the two. Seems to work fairly well.

Kingsford has always sucked.

That is why they sell Stubbs, Cowboy chunks, etc. If Kingsford heated fine and didn't make gallons of ash, no one would buy the other stuff and it wouldn't exist.

cowboy charcoal blows worse than kingsford! the entire bag is tiny shards of old cabinet moulding!

Grove charcoal is a bit better...but the bottom 1/3 of the bag is all shards. burns really hot and fast tho.

granted, kingsford doesn't taste nearly as good and dumps tons of ash, but it gives a nice consistent burn. 50/50 is idea.

So then it's the malamine and lead that aren't burning well?

And old computer parts.

Big box stores like HD do get lower quality products than smaller specialty stores even if the product has the same name. I'm not sure if this is the case with the charcoal, but it could be something to consider.

Kinsford is crap! The competition stuff is even a joke. Lump I the way to go, but not Stubbs. It has too many tiny pieces, Royal Oak is the stuff I like. The GFS store brand is made by Royal Oak and is only $12.99 for 20lbs. The nice thing about lump is it can easily relit if snuffed out at the end of a session.
