Hello all. I have not added hops to my kegs before, so I thought I might try it this time around. I am not terribly enthusiastic at hop bits clogging the out and/or causing foam so I'm going to add the hops in a muslin bag and tie it to the liquid out tube.

So how do you do it!?

Also, more to the point, if you use a bag what do you do to sanitize it? I was planning on soaking it in starsan, adding the hops, and then putting it in the keg after flushing with Co2. 1 oz simcoe I think. Or do you think boiling would work better?

i don't know the thread, but someone had a great idea a while ago. You soak your mesh bag, fishing line and stainless steel nut in star san. Add your hops to the bag with the nut (to weight it down) and take the lid off your keg (or use a different lid).

Here is the trick. Take a small worm clamp (also sanitized) and clamp the other end of the fishing line to the small protrusion for the relief valve on the underside of the keg's lid. It's very easy and will hold well. When you are done dry hopping, just pull the relief valve, pop the lid and then remove the clamp after pulling the bag out (or just cut the wire).

Very easy.

I used the mesh ball from northern brewer for a recent pale ale. It worked really well. I just left the ball with the hops in it the whole time the keg was on gas (about two months) and never had any discernable off flavors.

Either a sanitized mesh ball (they are designed for tea) or the sanitized hops bag. Those balls only hold about 1/2 ounce of leaf hops, so sometimes I use both in a keg. I don't use wire, marbles, etc. Just toss them in. When the keg kicks, they come out.
