As my circle of friends learn of my brewing escapades :tank: some freebies have come my way. One friend dropped off a 15.5g keg recently. And last night another buddy gave me a really nice whirlpool chest freezer. Hey great! Except this is a 21.7cu' freezer. Hmmm. Seems a bit overkill.

Right now I've got two corny kegs with dual regulators. I plan to add a couple more in the upcoming months.

Imperial Pale Ale and a Nut brown.

The fridge the kegs are in now is fine. But I did loose my second fridge or "garage" fridge. We have an upright deep freezer so I don't need the additional freezer space BUT the additional fridge space is nice. Plus this is an Energy Star deal whereas the ole` garage fridge is an energy hog.
I ordered an analog temp controller this morning so I can get my kegs with party taps in there and shut down the older fridge.

I'm toying with the idea of leaving the chest freezer in it's OEM configuration, "splitting" the interior space foam board. One side housing the kegs, tank, etc and coming through the top with a multi tap tower, and using the other side as a regular fridge.

This freezer is way to big - I'll never have enough home brew at one time to require this much space. I'm digging the idea of building a keezer - and getting the chest freezer for free was just too good to pass up.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Don't sell yourself short.
Not sure how big 21 ft is but my $50 keezer holds 8 mixed kegs. I currently have 5 taps. I hope switching to all ball locks will allow me to get 9 in there. I am planning 8 on tap with one for carbonated water.

If I did not need so many beers on tap, I would use the unused poirtion of a keezer for bottles lagering. As long as you have room go big.

Hell yea. Thats exactly what i have size wise. Cornies look tiny in there but its well worth it. I buy my sodas and other beverages at costco and i cam throw all 5 of my cornies in amd still hhave a **** ton of room. W temp control it only kicks on maybe once a day for ten minutes to so def no energy hog. Good luck with the keezer biuld

Lagering or Hop storage with extra space. Or you could use as an excuse to make more beer!:rockin::mug:

That is a huge freezer but i'm sure you'll be able to fill it with something!

The hard part in my opinion is finding somewhere to put something that big!

Have you lost your mind? The chest freezers with external controllers are versatile as fermentation/lagering/serving chambers. Probably not all concurrently, but you can re-purpose as the demands and seasons change. Do not get rid of it no matter what. I'd take it off your hands if you were not at the opposite end of Ohio.

Fedex was nice enough to drop off my TC from homebrewstuff.com today :rockin:
I plugged in the TC and set it for 40f - 1 beer later we're at 40f!!!!

So it looks like I'm moving forward with operation overkill :ban:

I thought I was getting a 7 cubic foot freezer from someone on Craigslist. Turned out to 15cubic feet. I thought it was huge, but over time I decided to 10 gallon batches, a keg of soda water for SWMBO, and four taps. Wouldn't mind more space in there from time to time.

I used to think 4 taps was more than I'd ever need, too. Now I sometimes wish for a few more. I'm sure you'll find a use for it. Give it some time.

Doooood I have the same refrigerator in the second picture. Is your temp setting on 5?!?! (maybe I'm just not reading the grainy picture all that well) Mine was set to below 1, just barely passed the internal "on" switch, and it fluctuated between 33 and 34 degrees. Any higher setting would cause everything to freeze, so I had to install a temp controller, as 33 degrees is WAAAYY too cold for me. Maybe my thermostat is junk.
