My wife got me a 50 plate chiller from DudaDiesel for Christmas. Two days later she gave birth to our second child so I haven't had time to brew lately. Last night I finally got time to brew with it. I did 5 gal of Ed Wort's Robust Porter. I live in metro detroit area so our ground water is about 45 degrees. I did one pass straight into the fermenter. I was able chilled 5 gal from boiling to 56 degrees in 1 min 41 seconds. Im happy can't wait to brew 10 gallons with it.

Congratulations! Plate chillers are the best, I would never go back to a immersion chiller after using mine. Now, when the Texas heat hits, I'm going to use my immersion chiller as a pre-chiller, so it still has its use!

They do rock.

My 30 plate will bring boiling wort to pitching temp as fast as I can pump the wort, just using hose water for cooling.

I might have to use a pre-chiller this summer, but they are amazing.

:rockin:

Wow....1:41 is actually pretty amazing. I have yet to use mine...but it's 3/4" with 40 plates (kind of funny, your camlock configuration is almost identical to mine :mug:)....and I'm pushing wort with a LG pump...I hope I can clock a time like that, but I guess it depends on the coolant temp. I'm in Chicago, right across the lake from you, so I bet it'll work pretty well.

Think I might have to get one, I don't think the IC is going to perform that well in the summer on full boils. Thanks for the info.

Mine is 3/4" as well. Your ground water has to be about the same temp as mine. Gotta love living in the north even in the summer you dont have to worry about ground water temps for chilling. Let me know how yours works out.
