Just smelled my buckets it still smells like my first brew. Will this effect my brew I'm doing now?

no, just make sure you clean it out properly before sanitizing. The buckets tend to smell a bit like beer over time, and will stain but they all do that and nobody every has an issue with off-flavors.

Gonna probably need more info. Properly cleaned and sanitized buckets should not have a smell at all prior to adding wort.

Yes, you should use some sort of product to ensure that they are clean after you use them, and before you sanitize them for use again. Most of us use oxyclean or something along the lines of PBW, but dishsoap can be ok if you do a really good job of rinsing it off, you don't want any residue to make its way into your beer. But, the smell will probably still be there, my buckets have always had a subtle sweet smell, if its something overpowering then I might think twice.

Mine all smell a little like beer. If the smell is really strong or a bad smell, obviously don't use the buckets. Just make sure they are cleaned and sanitized and you should be fine.

The good news is that moderate attention to cleaning and sanitizing will yield good results. Brewers were brewing in wood vessels with no knowledge of bacteria or even yeast for hundreds if not thousands of years. We now have great equipment and sufficient knowledge, so I'm sure your beer will be fine. I suspect even PET food grade plastic absorbs some beer odors from use.

I just clean all my stuff with hot water should I us soap

You're kidding right? Am I being punked here? Use no soap, never. Unless the hot water is boiling temperature you need to use a product like oxiclean or PBR to clean. Then sanitize with an iodine based sanitizer like starsan. Everything that the wort touches after chilling needs to be sanitized prior to.:mug: I guess I've never really tried to smell anything in my cleaned buckets but never have noticed anything.

Star-San is acid based. :mug:
